Please join us at the Human Trafficking Awareness Conference on Saturday, Oct. 25th.
Why? Because human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery and a growing problem. It is a terrible violation of human rights and it's happening not only overseas but right here in Colorado.
A few facts....
the I-70/I-25 corridor serves as a crossroads for human trafficking victims and a gateway to the Las Vegas circuit.
The average age of entry into prostitution in the US is age 13 (in SE Asia, average age is 9). Most of these children are forced, coerced or fraudulently trapped into the business, especially homeless and runaway youth.
Here in Denver we have many "massage parlors" as well as "closed brothels" where young women are locked in private residences and forced to service up to 20 men a day.
Just four months ago, the restaurant Sushi Moon in Greenwood Village was busted for slavery - two immigrant workers worked 16 hr. days and had not been paid in 4 years. When they complained, they were threatened, along with their families back in Korea who were also threatened.
80% of the all human trafficking victims are women and 50% are children and it is currently the 2nd most lucrative criminal activity in the world (after drug trafficking).
I realize there are many pressing issues to worry about in the world right now put please take just one minute and check out our website at www.htacdenver.com. Although human trafficking can be a heavy issue, there's much that can be done - and awareness is half the battle.
So please join us on Saturday Oct. 25th for the Human Trafficking Awareness Conference (HTAC) and learn more from the top abolitionists around the country; International Justice Mission, Not For Sale Campaign, Free the Slaves, Polaris Project, Love146, Praxus, Shared Hope, Praxus, United Students Against Sweatshops (USAS) and Transitions Global.
The HTAC will be held from 8:30am-5:30pm at Greenwood Community Church at 5600 E. Belleview Ave, Greenwood Village, CO 80111, 8:30am-5:30pm. It is a community event and open to the public.
Bertha Lynn (Channel 7 News) will be emceeing, along with representatives from the Colo. State Legislature, Professors from DU and Metro State, FBI, Co.Springs Police Department, Assistant Attorney General and many others.
For more information and registration go to; www.htacdenver.com. Registration is only $25/person and includes lunch from Tony's Market and a copy of the book Ending Slavery by Kevin Bales. (Register before Oct. 15th).
If you are unable or not interested in attending the conference - no problem, but please pass this information on to anyone else who may be interested in social justice issues and thanks!
