Anti-War Activists Hang Banners Over I-25
On July 19th , the morning after the Senate failed to pass a proposal ordering troop withdrawals from Iraq, three Fort Collins activists held two banners from an overpass over I-25. The banners read "Stop The War" and "Demand Justice." The banners were deployed during morning rush hour over the median at an overpass south of Harmony, in view of southbound motorists.
The response from drivers was overwhelmingly positive, with numerous honks, waves, and peace signs.
The activists were motivated by the continuation of the injustices of the U.S. occupation of Iraq and the failure of U.S. congress members to end the U.S.'s involvement in Iraq. Activist Zach Heath said "we hope to highlight dissenting voices in our community and encourage others to also speak out against the war." The level of violence brought on by the occupation of
Iraq was also a factor in the decision to use the banners. In October 2006, British medical journal the Lancet reported at least 655,000 Iraqis have been killed. To date, over 3,600 U.S. soldiers have been killed. The war and occupation have also resulted in hundreds of thousands of wounded and approximately 4 million Iraqi refugees. "It's past time for the atrocities to stop! Bring the troops home now and end the occupation," said Heath.
The activists left the overpass after a state patrol officer arrived on the scene. The activists were exercising their first amendment right of free speech by holding the banners from the overpass. Holding unattached banners has been deemed a legal form of free expression in Colorado. To ensure motorists were not endangered, the banners were held over the broad interstate median. Nonetheless, the state trooper told the activists to leave and threatened citations for further banner actions.
