Unconventional Action- A Denver Proposal for the DNC

Talks are growing about what a success would look like for those of us fighting for justice at the DNC. With a consulta quickly approaching (October 5th) to develop a strategy for the protests here in Denver we at Unconventional Denver decided to take the ideas and proposals that have been generated so far and synthesize them into an updated "Denver Proposal." This by no means represents the entire Denver community, it is a plan drafted by a couple of locals who have been active in the organizing against the DNC so far. We strived to draft this proposal by both maintaining as much of the spirit and ideas we have heard while at the same time fitting it into a model that takes into account the geographical and political realities of the city of Denver.

We encourage people, especially those participating in the Consulta of the Rockies, to come up with questions, concerns, objections and praise you have for the ideas layed out here. You can share your thoughts by either emailing unconventionaldenver@riseup.net or participating in the Consulta of the Rockies.

A Denver Proposal for the 2008 DNC

Sunday, August 24th
Theme- Stop Wars

March from civic center through downtown, stopping at places which support wars: Newmont Mining, Halliburton, CH2O, Northrop Grumman, recruiting center

Take 16th during the march
end March at Pepsi Center /w an Anti-War rally
Teach-ins about wars that night.

There has been much talk here in Denver of having the first "Day of Resistance" the Sunday preceding the convention. The thinking is that while many delegates will be in town by then, we will have more ease in reaching the center of town because the police won't be able to use the convention as an excuse for trumped up security.

We've heard many times from people that it is important to set a tone during the first day. We agree, however, with the first day being Sunday, there won't be the convention, and it seems in poor form to all get arrested protesting a symbol, on a day it's closed, the day before the convention. Taking 16th is an easily obtainable victory, that sets a stage for other actions the next day. This can also be a day to get used to civic center park, and iron out kinks in logistical systems (food, medical, housing, etc.)

Monday, August 25th
Environmental Justice!
Blockades surrounding the convention perimeter to the south, east and west with 3 marches (of varying degrees of risk) dropping off/ supporting the blockades.
A critical mass to support blockades is also a possibility.

Historically, there has been little connection made between the destruction of the environment, war and institutionalized oppression such as racism. Luckily, there seems to be more collaboration happening. We hope to make those links between each day's theme to shed light on the commonality we all share in fighting for a just world.

Having the environmentally-centered day follow the first day against wars would help make those links more explicit and provide continuity between the themes.

With the DNC already being funded by major polluters and plunderers such as Xcel Energy, CH2M Hill, Wells Fargo, Newmont Mining and Union Pacific choosing environmental justice as the theme also makes it easy to target those institutions funding and profiting off of the DNC. It would also be important to directly challenge the greenwashing that the city of Denver is currently doing by touting the event as the "greenest convention in history."

We've left details for the rest of the days open and felt that it was best to simply put down some ideas for setting the tone for the convention. To get those creative juices flowing- the other themes are loosely- ending racism, economic justice, and civil liberties/human rights.
