All across Colorado, people are preparing to observe Buy Nothing Day, an alternative to the capitalist-bred Black Friday. Black Friday (the day after thanksgiving) is the biggest shopping day in the country, and got its name because of its ability to make the numbers in the transaction register of a business go from red to black. Nowadays, Black Friday represents an excess of consumerism; people trampling eachother in order to be the first at the sale, families brutalizing eachother over the last toy on the shelf, and the unnecessary consumption of fast food in their frenzy to get prepared for Christmas. In past years, Colorado has had cheerleading squads for buy nothing day as well as a myriad of other events but this year there isn't a single event planned that is Buy Nothing Day specific. For those of looking go to a protest anyways, there is a small anti-globalization protest at one of the local Starbucks. If you're not up for the protest you can still participate by buying nothing. See you there!
