My son, Winslow Friday has a appealed hearing taking place on December 17, 2007 at 10:00 AM. Byron White United States Courthouse, Courthouse I.
My son, Winslow took an eagle for our annual Northern Arapaho Sundance. He was charged with taking an eagle and it went to federal court in Casper, WY. That was three years ago. Winslow pled not guilty on the grounds of Freedom of Religion. Winslow won and the charges were dropped. The United States appealed the decision and we are going back to court. The hearing will only take about one hour, but it is an very important case for our native people throughout the United States.
It is the only eagle case in the United States that deals with an enrolled Native American and exercising our freedom of religion. Futuristically, if it ends up that we win this case, we may not have to apply for eagle feathers to the repositories. It will set a precedence for us.
