On August 24 the Democratic national convention is coming to Denver and with it thousands of people who are angry, ready to protest the countless unjust practices of the US government and its Parties. The nation is preparing, the City is preparing, the Denver Police and Federal Agents are preparing, and we, the people of Denver need to prepare, talk, strategize and address the impact this event will have on our communities.
A bill is currently being pushed through that will grant $50 million for DNC security, with a little money towards the Iraq war tacked on just to make sure it gets signed. That is $50 million dollars that will be falling into the Denver police Department and the City’s pocket that will not be spent on providing housing for Denver’s ten thousand (10,000) homeless people many of whom are being forcibly removed from visible areas downtown.
That is $50 million that will NOT be spent on promoting sustainable neighborhoods, living wages, business entrepreneurship or housing ownership in low-income communities. Instead this money stands to further militarize the poor communities and communities of color in the neighborhoods surrounding downtown, neighborhoods already under the attack of gentrification and “redevelopment”.
The City’s “preparations” for the DNC and the candidates that will be politicking there do not and will not address the real needs of our communities locally, nationally or across borders. Immigration, the right to choice, racist policing and security procedures and wars, gay, lesbian and queer partnership rights and recognition are battle grounds that represent struggles of the people of this country, but at the DNC they represent only a platform for the staging of the next election.
But as the politicians are dancing and debating over the future of our country and our lives behind closed doors, we have the choice to act! We have a choice in how this goes down. The people of this city have a voice. We have communities, friends, allies and loved ones. We have ideas, skills and knowledge. And we still, supposedly, have the freedom of speech and assembly. These are the tools that we have to organize a movement against repression, oppression and state violence. Power to the People!
