Longest Walk 2 Participants Make It Over Monarch Pass, Heading to Denver this Weekend!

March 20th, 2008
Today the walkers *barely* got all the vehicles over Monarch Pass to be greeted on down the mountain by some great folks in Salida, CO working to educate others so that sacred sites in the area aren't destroyed by vandalism, and so the law will be more strict on these vandalism cases.

They will be joined by a delegation from Crestone who represent the San Luis Valley Citizen's Alliance, and all will speak in a Press Conference and Town Reception on March 22nd, 10am at the Heart of the Rockies Chamber of Commerce building by the hot springs in Salida, addressing threatened sacred sites and environmental devastation from oil and gas drilling in the Baca National Wildlife Refuge.

On Saturday we will welcome the walkers in Denver, 7pm just around the corner from the Denver March Pow Wow in Michelle's Ballroom @ Martha's Event Center, 4301 Brighton Blvd, just south of 44th Ave!

Come, hang out and eat some great food! Hear Longest Walk 2 singers and drummers at 8pm, followed by open stage to Longest Walkers and the Denver community.

On Sunday morning, we will be screening in Denver for the first time the Longest Walk 1978 film with footage and interviews, with brunch at 10am at the Four Winds Survival Project at 5th & Bannock and discussion afterwards.

We invite the Denver communities to join us for a Pot Luck dinner Sunday evening 6pm, also at Four Winds, and we can share the mission and outreach intended from our Denver visit and will hear the issues in and around Denver and the state from it's indigenous and allied communities.

While in Utah, Carrie Dann of the Western Shoshone visited the northern route and shared the struggle of the Western Shoshone's homelands, Newe Segobia, in protecting it from everything from gold mining to uranium mining to nuclear weapons testing. The walkers were treated in Montrose, Colorado the past Monday to a showing of the "Our Land, Our Life" movie.

This has really stayed in the hearts and minds of walkers and as they enter Newmont Mining's headquarters, our city, this weekend they are presenting a statement from the Western Shoshone and petitioning the people of Denver and the native people at the the pow wow to stand in solidarity with the Western Shoshone and tell Newmont Mining to stop policies that harm theirs and other indigenous communities around the world.

This will take place Monday March 24th with a Morning Blessing and Rally at the "Wheel" red native art installation in front of the Denver Art Museum at 100 W 14th Avenue Parkway at 8:00am. At 8:30 we will march to the Sand Creek Massacre plaque/ Civil War monument at the state capitol then to the West steps at 9:00am for a press conference and Longest Walk Proclamation reading by Ernest House Jr. The walkers will then march from there to Newmont Mining and present their solidarity signatures and commitment to carry these to the Nation's capitol and continuing to collect the signatures of indigenous peoples across the nation.

While walkers stay, we suggest that you help donate in the form of a Sponsor-a-Walker shoe! At all events we will have "shoes" with specific walker needs such as pow wow entry fee (the $7 is half of what a walkers has to spend in a day), request to get a pair of good walking shoes for those whose are wearing out, or gas cards.

All events don't charge but ask you try to sponsor in some way, these grassroots funds are what is helping us through the nation and to D.C. with the prayers and concerns of Native America.

Communities will be welcoming walkers as they make their way from Fruita (near Grand Junction) and hosting walkers in community meals, educational presentations and by sharing their own struggles in environmental justice and sacred sites issues along the route. In the resting towns, an opportunity to interact in those communities is presented, first in Montrose from March 17-18, next in Denver, March 22- 24, then Pueblo March 25-28, then they will convene at the Sand Creek massacre site for a special memorial weekend to honor the ancestors who died and their surviving descendants April 4-6, staying in Eads, Co. April 5th is the actual memorial ceremony- and the weekend will feature art at Eads art gallery Artsist of the Plains, by indigenous youth & Colorado Native artists; "Healing through the Next Generations", a film screening, community dinner, and more.
