Fellow radio enthusiasts and copwatchers,
I have aggregated a lot of lists of frequencies used by the United States Secret Service as well as other frequencies you might find interesting during the DNC. Feel free to listen to these and if you are able to garner more information about them or make corrections to the list, please do so and post the results for others to share!
Q: I heard it's illegal to listen to these frequencies, is that true?
A: Absolutely not. There are some frequencies that it's illegal to posess a scanner that can listen to (such as analog cell phone freqs). If you bought your scanner in the US from a legitimate store, all the illegal frequencies are already blocked. Listening to said frequencies, legally speaking, from what I understand, is not illegal on its own. It's the data transmitted in these frequencies that's illegal ie if they moved the cell phone frequencies, the legality would change. If you are cracking the encryption of frequencies, that might be illegal. You'll have to consult with a lawyer on that.
Q: Isn't it illegal to have lists of these frequencies and share information about them?
A: NO. These are considered public information and you can find plenty of them, even companies like Radio Shack provide them. People have been known to be harassed by the Secret Service for sharing information about them, however. Research a guy called "Bernie Smith" http://www.2600.com/secret/more/photo.html
Q: Where can I get a radio scanner to listen to these?
A: Online is your best option, but places like Radio Shack sell them. You'll want to get a programmable, dual trunking scanner. Lots of agencies are moving to a digital system, which these scanners won't pick up. Scanners that operate on these frequencies are much more expensive and I don't have any experience with these. Also make sure your scanner has a "squelch" ability, and signal stalker technologies are cool too. I heard a while back that Denver was switching to Digital and I think they might have started, but much of DPD is still available on Analog.
Q: Where can I get more information about this stuff? It's FASCINATING!!!
A: Google, dumbass
Q: What about "modified" scanners, I heard those are illegal?
A: Yup, that's true. The mere posession of a scanner modified to pick up frequencies that the FCC doesn't allow could land you in jail. So if you pick up a scanner from Canada, Mexico, or anywhere else, be careful and watch the laws.
Q: Can I get some pictures of these suits?
A: Absolutely, Cryptome has a huge archive of them, even outside of this page. http://cryptome.info/usss-hands/usss-hands.htm. If you snap some pictures, send them into Cryptome and Colorado Indymedia (colorado.indymedia.org) as well as Denver Copwatch (myspace.com/denvercopwatch)
Some Frequencies used at the last DNC http://cryptome.org/dnc-radio.htm
There is a USSS Office At 1660 LINCOLN STREET, DENVER, CO 80264, You might be able to pick up more frequencies near there.
Definition of Terms:
WHCA is the White House Communications Agency -- Reponsible for the Pres/VP's communications
HMX is the Presidential Nighthawk Aircraft Fleet
USSSUD is the USSS Uniformed Division, Mainly used with the pres and VP
Notes:
If you see a number that is just ".xxx" it's because I forgot to add a zero to the end OR is occupies that whole spectrum. Beat that.
If you hear "Air Force One", it's talking about the president's plane. "Air Force Two" is another plane which can either be a backup or the VPs.
If the president or VP ends up visiting check all Air Force One, HMX, and WHCA signals. May also apply for candidates. A lot of frequencies are scrambled, so you're SOL. They move these frequencies around and some of them have dual purposes or are assigned on an ad-hoc basis. Damnit.
There's an online feed of the DPD police frequencies, check it out at http://www.geocities.com/scan_denver/scanner.asx

Happy Scanning,
Comrade Ringo Kamens
Here's a couple of additional
Here's a couple of additional tips. Local laws may limit your use of a scanner, especially while mobile. There are somewhat unrelated reasons for this. I haven't heard of it in Colorado.
While listening may not be illegal, disclosing to others and/or acting on the information you hear is often a violation of various privacy acts, etc.
Also, Denver Police and many other agencies use "trunked" systems which hop frequencies frequently based on a control channel, much like cell phones do. You can easily get scanners which handle this, but you need at least some of the frequencies and the control channel to follow what's going on.
Which scanners to use?
denver Public Safety (DPD, DFD, Ambulance & SpecOps) is SUPPOSED to be going to a system trackable only by a couple of scanners (the GRE PSR-500 and -600 at this point). Lakewood (just to the east of Denver) has already gone that way, and there are rumours about Arvada (also close-by) going as well.
The system, for those of you with the tech & knowledge, is called ESK (Estended System Keying or somesuch) and is not trackable by anything at Radio Shack.
The Digital users are all on the colorado State DTRS System, which the GRE can do but not very well. For that I would suggest a Uniden BCD-396t or BCD 996t. Those will handle large state systems much better than the GRE radios do, but the GRE will track a digital (P25) system 'from scratch' ie. you only need the control channel. You have to load up all the voice channels on the Uniden radio.
More info is available on a site radioreference.com
As for disclosing, I thought
As for disclosing, I thought the legal boundary was that you can copy to others what you can legally hear, except where doing so would be infringing on copyright (ie copying VHF tv stations) or abetting a crime (ie telling your neighbor, who is cutting 500 kilos of coke in his basement that the cops are coming).
