Do you want to encrypt your data?
Are you worried that somebody might be eavesdropping on your communications?
Do you want to stop them from being able to hear/read what you say/write?
Do you want to leak documents online? Send email anonymously?
What type of information are you giving away? Who can view it, and under what premises?
Have you been subject to surveillance in the past?
Are you a member of the media who wants to protect your sources?
Do you want to know how to get past internet filters at school/work?
Do you want to hide information from your boss? Parents?
Are you a blogger who wants to be informed about your rights?
Do you want to put your security to the test?
Now, more than ever, it is critical that we organize and keep security in mind no matter if we have "something to hide" or not. We know that they're listening, and if we don't act then we're just handing our lives over to them. The era where you can freely give out your personal information to companies or talk in public forums without fear of being identified it over, so let's learn how to live safely in this new world.
A workshop on computer security and online privacy for activists and whistleblowers will be held at Denver Open Media on Aug 15 from 7:00 to approximately 8:00PM. Denver Open media is at 700 Kalamath St. Denver 80204. If you have computers, bring them!
Here is a preliminary agenda of what will be presented:
> Encryption for Windows, Mac, and Linux systems. When, how, and why it should be deployed. (Full disk encryption, file/folder encryption, email encryption, IM encryption)
> Hiding your identity online: The how and why
> Who can see information about you, when, how, and under what premises?
> Filters/Blocking Systems: types and how to get around them
The agenda is up for change as we feel out what the needs of the participants are. Bring your computers and bring ideas.

Some one should talk about VPNs, internet proxies and the such. If I attend, I could give a basic demonstration on how to set-up a VPN using m0n0wall on a home internet connection and how to configure it to accept remote connections. Also it might be helpful for someone to talk about how to use a basic SOCKS proxy in firefox utilizing an SSH connection (using the -D option for port forwarding).

If you show up, it would be awesome if you could present that information in a way that laypeople can understand it. I'll be giving an overview of proxies in general and how to use Tor/how it works.

As of now, I'm planning on it. I have a few question, so I can plan a small presentation/talk...
Also do people prefer that I outline the setup of a VPN with a basic m0n0wall box (this is one of the cheapest and simplest ways to get a VPN up and working from what I have found) or focus on SSH tunneling? Will someone be giving an overview of the internet and networking in general and places where information sniffing can occur?
