Taxi drivers from throughout the Denver Metropolitan Area
Summary: Colorado taxi drivers from throughout the Denver metropolitan area are joining together for a rally on Tuesday, August 19, on the west side of the Capitol building, seeking to vindicate their right to earn an honest living free from unnecessary government restrictions.
Colorado’s legislature recently rewrote the state’s taxi laws and the Public Utility Commission, which regulates the taxi market, is deliberating new policies for interpreting the new law. The current rules benefit a few established taxi companies, making it exceedingly difficult for drivers to buy their own cabs and operate as small business entrepreneurs.
“We tried a half dozen times to open up the taxi industry while I was in office,” said former State Representative Penn Pfiffner, now a Senior Fellow in Fiscal Policy at the Independence Institute. “This outmoded law is a holdover from the Great Depression that serves solely to shut competitors out of the market. There’s absolutely no compelling reason to have this system in place.”
The rally will be followed by a deliberation meeting with the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) in Commission Hearing Room A, 1560 Broadway Suite 250. The PUC will discuss how to implement the legislature’s decision in May to open the Denver taxi market. The PUC has three new taxi company applications before it, including Union Taxi Cooperative (applying to serve the Denver metro area), Castle Rock Taxi Cab Company (Castle Rock area), and Flatiron Cab Corporation (Boulder area), as well as extension of service applications from Yellow Cab and Freedom Cab.
“The legislature has provided the PUC with a golden opportunity to implement much-needed reforms in the Denver taxi market, which will benefit numerous aspiring entrepreneurs as well as countless taxi customers,” said Valerie Bayham, a staff attorney with the Institute for Justice. “The current system of letting existing taxi companies determine whether new taxi companies can open makes no more sense than asking Burger King whether a town needs a new McDonalds.”
That is why the Institute for Justice will join Colorado taxi drivers at their 8 a.m. rally on the Capitol before walking to the Public Utilities Commission’s 9 a.m. hearing. The Institute for Justice is a public interest law firm that has helped grassroots entrepreneurs open taxi markets in cities nationwide.
