Report shows how city is using sustainable water strategies to prepare for climate change

Washington, DC – American Rivers today named Grand Junction as one of the nation’s top “water wise” communities protecting clean water and public health with innovative green solutions. The city was chosen for its embrace of healthy rivers as social, economic and recreational amenities. The report, “Natural Security: how sustainable water strategies are preparing communities for a changing climate,” comes as Congress is gearing up to consider a climate bill including so-called “adaptation measures” that will help communities get ready for the floods, droughts, and waterborne diseases that come with global warming.
“We are at a transformational moment for our nation’s rivers and water infrastructure, and Grand Junction is forging the path to a healthier, more secure future,” said Rebecca Wodder, president of American Rivers.
Grand Junction’s rivers were once forgotten places with uranium tailings, salvage yards, and a landfill along their banks. Gradually, local river clean-up projects turned into a valley-wide effort to reclaim the rivers as social, economic, and recreational amenities. Through the creation of riverfront trails and parks, restoration of the riverfront has helped stimulate economic growth and improve quality of life in Grand Junction. The community’s restoration efforts will help keep quality of life high, regardless of the challenges brought by climate change.

The past 60 years of China's Communist history can be divided roughly into two phases.
The first phase, between 1949 and 1978, was this: the Communist bureaucracy had totally destroyed society, the economy and the culture. This was done by a total bureaucratic monopoly over all of nation's wealth, labor, markets, organizations and institutions. Furthermore, it completely destroyed the free press and the law. But this unprecedented bureaucratic domination immediately produced unprecedented man-made disasters in world history, not just China's. The disasters include endless violence and terror, the creation of the state sector and people's communes, the total bureaucratization of media, education, and thought.
Texas authorities on Sunday were searching for a convicted burglar who escaped from a medical facility by rappelling off the building using a string of bedsheets, officials said.
Joshua Duane Barnes, 21, was last seen at 8:15 p.m. Saturday on the seventh floor of a Texas Department of Criminal Justice medical facility in Galveston, Texas, said TDCJ spokesman Jason Clark.
Fifteen minutes later, Barnes was gone, Clark told CNN.
Security officers noticed there was a hole in the wall and a vent had been removed.
According to Clark, Barnes busted a hole through a wall in his room and then broke through a thick window.
He apparently tied bedsheets together, rappelled down the side of the building to a roof, and then jumped to the ground, Clark said.
Barnes was serving 35 years in prison for several felony convictions, including seven burglary charges, two escape charges and an aggravated assault charge in the Texas Panhandle area, according to a TDCJ press release.
The inmate was being housed at a prison in Midway, Texas. He was transported to the medical facility in Galveston last week after being hurt in an altercation, TDCJ said.
The department of criminal justice has tracking dogs and dozens of officers searching the area, Clark said. Local police officers also joined the search.

Over the last election season one of the most often sounded battle cries from the right involved voter registration fraud relative to ACORN. ACORN is a community organizing group known for being a non-profit organization helping the poor. Their focus started with aiding impoverished Americans on welfare with basic needs like clothing, furniture and later attaining housing, advocating for worker's rights and more. They got involved in political activism on behalf of the poor starting in the early 80's and later voter registration.
When I heard about all the accusations leveled at ACORN during the 2008 election season I did research and discovered, at the time, most of the voter registration accusations were unfounded. There were some cases for sure, but any group hiring large amounts of people will always be subject to having some bad apples in the bunch. There were also cases of other voter registration groups having issues it just seemed like something that happened occasionally.
I often defended them as a group of people trying to do the right thing full of mostly good workers. When I saw the recent video footage of the workers in ACORN coaching people pretending to be setting up brothels (some involving minors) on how to attain housing I was shocked. I couldn't believe people who went into that business could stray so far from doing good things in their community. Not that it would make it any better, but they weren't even getting paid off by the video activists. They just up and volunteered the information.
There are wounds that even time can’t close, as the one opened in our hearts when our brother, friend and comrade Carlos, when going to fight against racism, was killed by a neo-Nazi military.
Something inside us died that day. But also a strong feeling of endless reassurance to fight against fascism and injustice was born. The election of Barack Obama as president was promised as bringing a different direction to U.S. foreign policy. But as recent news shows, Obama will continue U.S. imperialist policies, for one by increasing the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan. In the beginning of his term this year he kept on Bush family crony Robert M. Gates as Secretary of “Defense.” Gates announced recently the Amerikan military will increase the number of overall troops in service for these new imperialist wars. Contributing to this increase are the Amerikan people, looking for jobs in the faltering economy, taking on military positions.
On Monday July 20 “Defense” Secretary Gates announced a "temporary" increase of the size of the army up to 22,000 troops. This increase is to meet the "persistent pace" of operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, according to Gates (1).
The increase is to occur over three years. In the end, the size of the army will increase to 569,000 active duty soldiers. Previously, in 2007, Gates had given a goal of an expansion to 547,000 soldiers. This previous target was reached in May.
The Obama administration has made Afghanistan the focus of its foreign policy, significantly escalating the war effort there. (Though there is division within the administration regarding the degree of escalation sought. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/0...) Obama's motive for expanding the war in Afghanistan seems to be a desire to appear strong in foreign policy combined with the idea that war in Afghanistan is much safer than a war on Iran-the primary target of Israel and its Lobby.
Since campaigning for the presidency, Obama has felt a political need to demonstrate that his professed opposition to the war in Iraq did not mean that he was an "isolationist" or afraid of using American military power in the world. To illustrate this position he has been consistently supportive of an effective war in Afghanistan.
Stephen G. Rademacker writes in the "Washington Post" of Sept. 5: "As a candidate for president, Barack Obama correctly sensed that to win the Democratic nomination he needed to portray himself as more opposed to the Iraq war than any of his opponents, but that to win the general election he needed to be able to reassure the American people of his determination to defeat terrorism.
"Afghanistan offered a convenient solution: Obama held it up as the 'good' war that he was determined to win, unlike the 'bad' war in Iraq that he would end. He promised a military surge in Afghanistan, and he dared John McCain and the outgoing administration to get to his right on the issue.
"On a political level this strategy worked brilliantly, enabling Obama to deflect any suspicion that he was a McGovernite ready to surrender to Islamic extremism. PETTUS, W. Va. – Early this morning two concerned citizens, Dea Goblirsch and Nick Martin, locked down to a drill rig on Coal River Mountain’s Bee Tree mountaintop removal site, effectively stopping blasting. Two others, Grace Williams and Laura Von Dolen, joined them in direct support, holding a banner with the message “Save Coal River Mountain”.
These nonviolent protestors have taken this action to bring attention to the extreme danger facing residents of the Coal River Valley from blasting near the Brushy Fork Impoundment. They plan to stay locked down until law enforcement removes them.
Resident of Rock Creek, W Va., Delbert Gunnoe, stated his concerns with the blasting, “You know when they put a blast over there, and it shakes the windows over here, at what, ¾-a-mile distance, imagine what it does over there.” Gunnoe continued, “if [the impoundment] did bust…what would be the destruction? The town of Whitesville would no longer exist.”
The four are fearful of the blasting that Massey Energy began in late October. These blasts are 200 feet from the Brushy Fork Impoundment, permitted to hold nine billion gallons of toxic coal slurry. The impoundment sits atop miles of hollow, abounded underground mines, further endangering its integrity. By Massey’s own estimates, roughly 998 people will die should the dam break. The emergency evacuation plan states that a 40-foot wall of sludge, cresting at 72 feet, will flow through the valley, reaching 20-feet-high about 15 miles down the road. Apart from the initial flood, the impact of this potential spill would be felt along the Coal River’s 88 miles.

Independence Movement. As a part of this movement Dr. Shakur has been a target of the illegal Counterintelligence Program carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (COINTELPRO). This was a secret police strategy used in the U.S. starting in the 1960's to destroy and neutralize progressive and revolutionary organizations. It is believed that Dr. Shakur's resistance to this program led to his arrest and trial.

Water is essential, in various ways, to all human activity. Water is something that humans, literally, cannot do without. Every human needs water in order live and to have a good life. Societies need water in order to be provide for the survival of their populations. Usable water, as a resource, is finite and distributed unevenly across the planet. Most societies have difficulty providing water to their populations, especially in the Third World. The inability to access water is referred to as the water crisis.

His motto becomes: “Let’s you and him go fight; I’ll hold your coat.”</p>
<p>Depending on external circumstances, such an individual may become one of three varieties of chickenhawk:</p>
<p>• If there is no draft, and the nation is at peace, the individual becomes a Common Chickenhawk;</p>
<p>• If there is a draft, and the nation is at peace, the individual becomes a Chickenhawk First Class;</p>
