Russell Means, a prominent Oglala Lakota activist, actor and cancer survivor, is one of several elders scheduled to attend a buffalo harvest March 16 to 18 at Fort Lewis College (FLC), in southwestern Colorado.
“I am very honored to be present at the upcoming buffalo ceremony,” Means told ICTMN. “I look forward to speaking to the students.”
Means is currently undergoing a periodic medical checkup at a Scottsdale, Arizona clinic where he received targeted radiation therapy for throat cancer. He says a combination of that therapy and traditional healing methods have left him “essentially cancer-free.”
Fort Lewis College President Dene Kay Thomas Threatens Students with Kent State
Submitted by Anonymous on November 17, 2010 - 4:18pmAt Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado an urgent letter was released altering the Fort Lewis and Durango community about a meeting that took place between FLC president Dene Thomas, Provost Steven Roderick and two students. Concern was raised because of the methods used by the president and the Provost of the college with regards to student input. Not only did the students concerns fall on deaf ears, but we feel there was an attempt to silence us. Most surprising of which is an analogy President Thomas made to FLC and Ken State. Please read the narrative below explaining the meeting in further detail.

Following the Call of the Woods: Some Impressions of Wild Roots/Feral Futures 2010
Submitted by Anonymous on July 2, 2010 - 9:01pmThe Wild Roots/Feral Futures gathering took place nestled in the rugged San Juan National Forest of southwestern Colorado, stretching from the first quarter moon on Saturday, June 19th, through the Summer Solstice on the 21st, to the full moon on Saturday the 26th, although many camped out days prior and stayed past the “official” end of the gathering. Billed as “a rewilding gathering of rebel tribes and Earth warriors”, Feral Futures essentially an opportunity to unplug from the consumerist, urban milieu in which most of us live and struggle from day to day, and instead visualize and practice living in communal simplicity, freed from Civilization's technology and social hierarchy and in connection with the rhythms of Nature.
Fort Lewis College students announce SAFER referendum
Submitted by Anonymous on February 14, 2010 - 2:24pm
DURANGO, CO - Students at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado are taking action this semester to promote more sensible marijuana policies on campus. A student organization called "SAFER FLC," which stands for "Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation at Fort Lewis College," is collecting petition signatures to put this question to a vote in the next student body election:
Do you agree that sanctions imposed by Fort Lewis College for the use and possession of marijuana should be NO greater than the sanctions imposed for the use and possession of alcohol, and that students should not face suspension or removal from student housing for the private use and possession of up to one ounce of marijuana?

The referendum is intended to convey the student body’s opinion that alcohol use is more harmful than marijuana use both to students and the surrounding community. With this in mind, students say that Fort Lewis College should not issue disproportionate sanctions that steer students toward using alcohol and away from making the safer choice to use marijuana. This referendum also address student concerns about Residence Hall policies that allow for evictions for minor marijuana offenses.
This Monday, February 15th, SAFER FLC will be in the Fort Lewis College student union building (CUB) from 10:30a.m. to 1:00p.m. to introduce the SAFER Referendum & collect signatures. Students are encouraged to volunteer to help collect signatures.
